ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

It’s election season and it’s always nice to hear candidates tell you about the things they might do someday. But if experience matters to you, then here is a list of just a few of the things I’ve already done:

Certain types of behavior are absolutely intolerable in our society, and I am very proud to have worked with the Newton County Building Inspector and our sheriff’s deputies to help put an end to this particular example of reprehensible conduct:

Protecting Lincoln Township from the construction of a confined feeding operation is just one of many lawsuits I’ve successfully handled in service to the community. This case is interesting because it demonstrates the importance of the zoning process in Newton County. Throughout my career I have been called upon to provide legal advice to local boards in their public hearings and defend their decisions over appropriate zoning and land use. Striking a balance between larger-scale agricultural operations that are important to our economy, and their proper compatibility near more residential areas is not easy in a developing rural county. Our public officials and board volunteers are often asked to make very difficult decisions. In doing so they must comply with the law, while also trying to respect the different interests of thousands of people.  It can be a hard and thankless job, and I will always have a deep respect for the members of our community who step up to serve on these public boards. I am particularly proud of our success in the following case, as it was a difficult challenge, and the opposing attorney did an excellent job advocating for his client.

Over the years I’ve found that strictly enforcing our local laws and ordinances is sometimes necessary to protect the peace and tranquility of our rural community. While reasonable business and economic development activities are encouraged here, they cannot be conducted in a way that threatens the safety and security of the public. Experience has shown me that once we establish the proper standard, we often then find positive ways to work together and meet it.

I have successfully defended Newton County, our local towns, and our public officials from dozens of misguided lawsuits and fraudulent claims. I have effectively managed litigation against our communities and prevailed in litigation to protect our taxpayers from paying out thousands in unfounded damage claims and attorney’s fees.

Public service is very important to me. I believe that supporting local projects and programs such as the Newton County Fairgrounds, 4H, our schools, and our historical society is very important for anyone seeking to hold an elected office. Service to the local community has always been one of my core values, and it will remain so regardless of the outcome of any election.
